Join us for an evening that presents a micro-portrait of Polish composer and violinist Grazyna Bacewicz. An active performer throughout most of her life, Bacewicz was severely injured in a car accident in 1954 that left her unable to play her instrument for a year.
Varo Quartet will juxtapose the last string quartet she wrote before the accident, Quartet No. 4 (1951), representing her quasi-neoclassical middle compositional period, with the first quartet she wrote after the accident, Quartet No. 5 (1955), representing the beginning of her avant-garde period. In doing so, we pose the question: how do these different styles present a different interaction of the physical with the acts of both performing and listening to music?
